When my son was five he was asked the age old question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” His answer was so simple, it stopped me dead in my tracks. “Happy,” he said with a little shrug. At the time I was a single mom going to school full time. I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. And here my son was with the answer all along. Happy. The next day I changed my major from “what society thinks is an acceptable career move” to something that made me happy. I was a thirty-something, single mom of four, going to school for a degree in dance.
A few people have asked, “why Ipiluni? I chose it because it literally means “she/he is happy.” in the Aleut (Alutiiq) language. It is a daily reminder of what I want to be when I grow up. It’s not just a name, it’s a way of life. It’s a philosophy. It is me.
So there you have it. What do you strive to be when you grow up? What ever it is I hope that it makes you happy.
